Kansas Collectibles Every year the owner/manager of the grain elevator has an after harvest dinner to celebrate both the good and bad years of farming. A small gift with the name of the elevator is given to each farmer who stores grain at the elevator. Others soon got into the gift giving mode, engineering firms, museums, insurance companies, even banks.
Over the years these gifts have included pens, pencils, cups, calendars, pocket knives, etc. One of the most common is "bullet pencils." The gifts can be somewhat dated by when elevators changed hands and by the configuration of telephone numbers. I started collecting the "gimmies" as they're called in Kansas about ten years ago and only collect the ones from Kansas so I'm putting some of our great finds on this page. I am so humbly pleased that Skyland Grain decided to give our new book to their members this year.
Pencils and a special type with a metal cover over the lead point called bullet pencils because of their shape.
